DENTAL IMPLANTS

These are attachments that allow us to replace missing teeth; taking on the function of the root, regaining the chewing function and improving considerably the aesthetics.

Implants have a threaded appearance similar to a screw, and are made of titanium, which has been shown to be one of the materials with the best biocompatibility with human bones, allowing for an implant-bone attachment.

These implants are inserted into the bone by way of a simple surgery. After the surgery, a period of 3 -4 months is needed for osteo-integration (implant-bone attachment), finalizing with the reconstruction of a prosthesis such as a crown.

How does the implant attach to human bone?

It’s a biological process known as osteo-integration, through which a direct connection between bone and the surface of the implant is established. Upon achieving osteo-integration (a period of approximately 3 to 4 months) the implant is found firmly united to the bone, successfully supporting the prosthesis and fulfilling masticatory functions.

What are the functions of an implant?

  • Replace missing teeth
  • Recover masticatory function and aesthetics
  • Ensure that the jawbone maintains its function and does not lose function of bone and surrounding tissue
  • Provide an anchor for the dental prosthesis, as well as providing the stability necessary to be comfortable.

How is the implant procedure done?

The surgical procedure is simple and usually completed with little discomfort. In the majority of cases, the procedure is done using a local anesthetic in a way very similar to other dental treatments.

What to expect after the procedure is completed. The patient may have light discomfort while the anesthesia wears off, as well as moderate inflammation where the work was done and/or possible bruising. These phenomena do not represent any concerning issues and are reflected by the reaction of the repaired tissue after the procedure and will pass after several days.

Important considerations regarding dental implants

It is essential and necessary to complete a clinical and radiological evaluation of the zone where the implant will be made, especially if a long period of time has passed since the tooth was lost, which may present a significant resorption of the residual bone, and consequently complicate the implant procedure, including having to resort to auxiliary bone augmentation procedures such as a bone graft, in order to achieve greater volume of bone and tissue.

In cases in which implants are being placed to replace a tooth that will be extracted, the specialist will make the decision to place the implant at the same time that the dental extraction takes place (post extraction implant), or to wait for a period of 30 to 45 days after the dental extraction to place the implant in a second procedure; this decision depends on the condition of the bone, the state in which the tooth is upon extraction and the specialist’s opinion.

The osteo-integration process

The period of osteo-integration takes approximately three to four months after the implant is placed. In this period the goal is to achieve the union between the human bone and the surface of the titanium implant. When this period of time has ended the specialist will evaluate the union of the implant. If it is found to be satisfactory, an impression of the area will be taken to use as a mold in the construction of the crown which will be attached to the implant and which will be the final step in the implant procedure process.

Diet and post-surgical care of dental implants

It is important to rec0gonize several indications and post-surgical care recommendations after the placement of implants, which are:

  • Placing ice on the surgical zone
  • Moderate rest the day of surgery
  • No heavy exercise
  • No rigorous rinsing
  • No sun exposure
  • No smoking

Regarding food, it is important to consider:

  • Avoid fats and irritants
  • Avoid hot food and drink
  • Avoid hard foods or foods that are difficult to chew

These recommendations should be observed for 5 days after surgery.

The following medications may be recommended:

  • Analgesics (to avoid postoperative discomfort)
  • Anti-inflammatory (to avoid heavy inflammation in the zone)
  • Antibiotic (to offset any risk of infection)

JR Dental Studio really is as good as it gets for me. I've seen my fair share of dentists growing up-for routine checkups, cleanings, and fillings-and not many measure up. They were very well recommended by my aunt whose positive experience here led me to check them out while I was browsing around for Invisalign. Dr. Ruiz saw me on my first visit and was extremely helpful in guiding me towards my decision to get the Invisalign. He explained the whole process and also let me consider other options. I did not feel pressured to make a decision at that very moment, which I appreciated very much from them. I've had my cleanings done there as well. One of their best practices is that they promote preventive care, which is important to me. I rather they fix something small before it becomes a bigger problem. Overall, I've had a great experience at JR Dental Stuido, and would definitely recommend their services to anyone.
